Vital to preserve food heritage

The Straits Times | Monday, May 12, 2014

Hong Kong Jin Tian, a renowned roast meat shop in Tiong Bahru, is closing down due to high rentals.

I refer to the story, Tiong Bahru Roast Meat Shop To Close (SundayLife!, April 27).

Another traditional food has fallen victim in a society too obsessed with chasing dollars and cents.

In recent years, Singapore has not only lost much of its history and heritage, but it also has its food scene diminishing due to high rental cost. If nothing is done to preserve or invent what is uniquely Singapore, tourists will stop coming.

Look at Penang: It is progressing without sacrificing anything in the pursuit of advancement.

Step into Gurney Drive and you will find local cuisine aplenty and at very reasonable prices.

Walk into Georgetown and you will find yourself in Penang's past. It is now a Unesco World Heritage site.
