Anwar files suit seeking to invalidate sodomy conviction

The Star/ANN | M. Mageswari | Tuesday, Apr 18, 2017

KUALA LUMPUR - Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has filed a suit seeking to declare his conviction for sodomy invalid.

The PKR leader named the Government as the sole defendant in the civil suit.

He claimed that he was convicted and sent to jail in February 2015 based on perjured evidence given by his accuser and former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 31.

In his statement of claim, Anwar said the Government knew what Saiful said was false.

"Yet, the defendant relied upon and perpetuated the perjury of Saiful to its advantage.

"The defendant fabricated evidence in the form of an alleged DNA sample and used it to support the perjured evidence of Saiful," Anwar said, adding that he is seeking immediate release on grounds that his conviction for sodomy was obtained through fraudulent means.

Anwar was jailed five years for sodomising Saiful at Desa Damansara Condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26, 2008.

Anwar filed the claim at the High Court registry yesterday through his lawyers N.Surendran and Latheefa Koya.

Surendran said he would meet a court registrar to fix an early date for hearing, saying that a certificate of urgency has been filed to expedite the court process.

Anwar was sent to jail on March 7, 2014 after the Court of Appeal overturned his acquittal.

He appealed against the conviction but on Feb 10, 2015, the Federal Court dismissed his appeal and upheld the jail term.
