KUALA LUMPUR - Four traffic policemen were given letters of commendation for arresting a businessman who tried to bribe them.

Kpl Rahim Lamburakan and Kpl Nik Mohd Huznikri Mohd Nor were on patrol along the North-South Expressway on July 23 when they spotted a BMW with an Ex-Policemen's Association logo on its registration plate along Km130.

They attempted to stop the car but it sped off.

"We switched on our beacon and siren and even hailed him on the loudspeaker to stop but he just ignored us," said Kpl Rahim at Bukit Aman yesterday.

He said the driver of the BMW was speeding at close to 200kph.

"We immediately radioed Kpl Musa Mohamed and L/Kpl Muhamad Yusof Saidin who were ahead of us to intercept the car.

"They spotted the BMW at Km58.2 of the highway and stopped it," he said, adding that he and Kpl Nik Mohd Huznikri reached the scene about five minutes later.

A thorough search of the car found nothing unusual, but the 33-year-old driver pulled out RM100 as "settlement" when the policemen told him he would be issued a summons for failing to stop.

"I told him he could only settle the fine at the police station, but he tried again and I warned him against it," he said, adding that the man was arrested when he again offered the bribe.

The four policemen received commendation letters from federal traffic police chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff yesterday, with Kpl Rahim getting RM100 as an extra token of appreciation.

"This is the kind of personnel that I need on my work force," said SAC Mohd Fuad, adding that he hoped the public would stop offering bribes to traffic policemen.
