Cops seek to extend remand of man who raped mother-in-law

The Star/ANN | Wednesday, Aug 20, 2014

SIBU - The police will apply to the court to extend the remand of a 42-year-old man who allegedly raped his mother-in-law.

OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Kamal Kordi said the seven-day remand of the suspect would end next Tuesday, adding that an extended remand was necessary as the police were still investigating the case under Section 376 (3) of the Penal Code for rape.

Asked if there was strong evidence to prosecute the suspect, he said it depended on the outcome of the chemist and medical reports on the 69-year old victim and the suspect, as well as witness statements.

"Once all these have been done, we will refer the case to the state Attorney-General for recommendation," he added.

It was reported that the father of eight went to the victim's house next door at a village here at about 4pm last Friday.

It was learnt that he pushed the woman to the floor, covered her mouth and raped her.

It is believed that the man committed the offence while under the influence of drugs and that he had previous convictions for drug abuse and house break-ins.

Following a report lodged by the suspect's wife, police went to their home at 2am on Monday and arrested him.
