GEORGE TOWN - The DAP central executive committee (CEC) is expected to name its candidate for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election after its meeting tonight.

With two weeks to go before nomination day, Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said five names, none of them current elected representatives, would be submitted to the CEC for consideration.

"The decision is up to the CEC," Chow said after the Earth Day Barter Trade 2014 in Beach Street here yesterday.

The CEC meeting will start at 7.30pm in Kuala Lumpur.

Although Karpal Singh's third son Ramkarpal has been widely speculated to replace his father, Chow declined to reveal whether Karpal's children were on the list.

New Zealand journalist Tim Donoghue, who wrote the book Karpal Singh - The Tiger of Jelutong, said Ramkarpal, 38, was earlier nominated to take his father's place should Karpal lose his seat because of his sedition conviction.

On the party's preparations for the by-election, Chow said a Bukit Gelugor by-election committee had been formed.

The Bukit Gelugor by-election is fixed for May 25 while nomination is on May 12.
