Free apps that help Malaysians save

The Star/ANN | Sunday, Aug 31, 2014

For drivers, there are a number of Shell apps, such as the Shell Motorist and Shell miGarage apps. All Shell apps can be downloaded for free.

Often, making smart consumer choices requires having information at your fingertips.

The many free mobile apps available for download are tools that help consumers make cost-efficient decisions while on the go.

Budgeting is the key to sound financial management especially when you are out shopping and apps like Pocket Budget and Toshl Finance are excellent for tracking expenses.

To track grocery prices, there is SmartShopper which helps Malaysians save money on their weekly shopping.

For the avid traveller, Airbnb features interesting and quirky places to stay in more than 34,000 cities.

As some of these are in locations off the beaten track, the accommodation can be quite cheap when compared to conventional hotels.

For drivers, there are a number of Shell apps, such as the Shell Motorist and Shell miGarage apps, for Android and iOS devices that provide faster access to useful driving tips and information.

Using the Shell Motorist app, motorists can plan their journey and keep their car tuned and in good shape, ensuring that maximum fuel efficiency can be attained.

All Shell apps can be downloaded for free, a fact that student Kate Ang, 20, appreciates.

Always on the lookout for ways to reduce her travelling expenses, she has downloaded the Shell Motorist app on her Android phone.

"I've followed some of the tips and found them very practical. I've yet to see how it will add on to my savings as I've only just got the app. However, I'm already saving from using Shell FuelSave 95 which, as its tagline goes, was 'Designed to last longer per tank'."

The app lets her set and track reminders for up to three vehicles, she says, and she has incorporated her Perodua Myvi and motorcycle and the family's sedan in her list.

"But what I really love is how the planner finds me the best route to use whenever I am heading out and even gives me an estimated cost of my journey via the trip cost calculator feature.

"It also tells me where the nearest Shell stations are. This is good because I sometimes go so low on fuel and have to go to the nearest station. I am now particular about fuelling up at Shell because I want to take part in the current 'Shell Easy Win' contest to have a chance at winning the RM20,000 prize. If I win, I'll save most of the money to offset my food and utility bills."

Being a regular Shell user, Suhaila Abdullah, 35, has also downloaded the Shell Motorist app to help her save on motoring costs and ultimately her living costs.

"I am a firm believer that using the right fuel can result in big savings at the end of the day, savings I can use for other things like shopping for food or paying the water bill," says Suhaila, a foodie and avid shopper who is lamenting the fact that her purchasing power has been reduced of late.

"That's why I am sticking to Shell FuelSave 95," she says.

Like Ang, she is also filling in the contest forms for the "Shell Easy Win" contest, hoping to become the next winner.

The "Shell Easy Win" contest is open to Malaysians and permanent residents of Malaysia aged 18 and above.

Customers who spend a minimum of RM30 at Shell stations nationwide, including at Shell Select outlets, are eligible to win RM20,000 weekly. Shell V-Power users stand a chance to double their winnings to RM40,000.

To participate, customers simply need to drop their contest form and receipt into a contest box at any Shell station nationwide. Contest ends Sept 14.
