PETALING JAYA - Giant pandas Feng Yi and Fu Wa are expected to arrive from Chengdu, China, next month.

"Both Malaysia and China have agreed that the giant pandas should arrive in Malaysia on a more significant date to celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations between both countries in May," the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry said in a statement yesterday.

Fu Wa and Feng Yi were originally slated to take up residency at Zoo Negara next Wednesday on a 10-year loan.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak made the request to the then Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during his official visit to Nanning in 2012.

In June 2012, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) signed an agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association to secure the giant pandas on a loan.

The ministry said the agreement showed Malaysia's commitment to support China's plan to increase the population of the endangered giant pandas.
