It's crocodile mating season - so watch out, says Perhilitan

JOHOR BARU - It's the mating season for crocodiles and the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) has warned anglers and residents of riverine areas to be extra cautious.

State department director Hasnan Yusop said they had identified 10 crocodile habitats and had placed warning signs along areas most frequented by people.

They include Sungai Sarang Buaya, Sungai Muar, Kampung Air Papan, Kuala Sungai Jemaluang and Sungai Tenglu.

The others are Sungai Mersing, Kuala Sungai Sekakap, Sungai Danga, Sungai Rengit and Sungai Batu Pahat.

"It is essential to be cautious, especially between December and May, as this is the mating period," said Hasnan, commenting on a Bernama report of a recent sighting of a 3m-long crocodile along Sungai Sarang Buaya in Muar.

"We also hope the public will inform us of complaints pertaining to the threat of wild animals as we are trying to ensure minimal conflict between humans and wildlife," he said.
