Justice of peace and wife escape gunman's bullets

The Star/ANN | Thursday, Jul 3, 2014

MALACCA - A justice of the peace and his wife narrowly escaped death when a gunman shot at their car before neighbours came to their aid in Taman Kasturi in Semabok here.

Yoong Hee Kian, 71, and Cheng Kwi Chu, 68, had just returned from a night market when the incident happened at 7.15pm on Tuesday.

They were about to get out of their car when they saw an intruder scaling the wall of their house.

The frightened couple decided to stay put in the car before Yoong started honking to attract the neighbours' attention.

The man then fired three shots at the car, said Yoong.

Neighbours who had heard the honking came running out, causing the gunman to flee by hopping onto an awaiting motorcycle.

Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Salehhudin Abd Rahman said the police had retrieved three spent bullets at the scene.

"The shots hit Yoong's car bumper, his rear window and the house grille," he said.

Yoong, a businessman, said he was startled to see the intruder.

"My immediate reaction was to ask my wife to duck and remain in the car, and I did the same," he said.

"I kept pressing the car horn and, luckily, the neighbours came to our aid," he said, adding that the CCTV at his house captured the whole drama.
