Malaysia Airlines keeping tabs after Mount Ontake eruption

The Star/ANN | Monday, Sep 29, 2014

PETALING JAYA - Malaysia Airlines is closely monitoring the situation in central Japan following the eruption at Mount Ontake, the country's second highest volcano.

"We are closely monitoring the situation.

"However, as of now, our operations between Kuala Lumpur and Narita as well as Osaka are normal," said a MAS official.

It was reported that at least 31 people were presumed dead near the peak of the volcano that erupted unexpectedly, sending huge clouds of ash and rocks tumbling down.

Hundreds of people, including children, were stranded on the mountain, which is a popular hiking site, after it erupted without warning on Saturday.

The volcano was still erupting yesterday, pouring smoke and ash as far as 80km away.

Ontake last erupted seven years ago.

Its last major eruption was in 1979.
