PETALING JAYA - Malaysia Airlines has contacted the next-of-kin of those on board Flight MH17 to initiate the compensation payment process.

MAS strategic communications manager Khairunnisak Dzun Nurin said the airline was also explaining contractual benefits to families of the crew, along with further goodwill payment to help with their immediate needs.

"Payment of advance compensation will not affect the families' rights to claim compensation according to the law at a later stage, but will be calculated as part of the final compensation," she said in a statement.

Khairunnisak said the airline was also offering financial assistance of RM16,000 (S$6,249) to families of all those who perished.

"To date, a majority of the families have already received the financial assistance, which will not be part of any compensation that may be payable," Khairunnisak said.

She stressed that matters relating to compensation were private and confidential and MAS would not discuss details in public.

Khairunnisak said the main focus was to care for the affected families and the airline had assigned trained MAS staff as caregivers to them.

In a separate statement to The Star, Khairunnisak said the families of two MH17 Malaysians victims whose bodies were identified had been notified.

"The airline, together with other relevant authorities, have been in contact with the passengers' families,'' she added.
