PETALING JAYA: Almost 100kg of medical supplies were onboard Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 when it crashed in the Donetsk region in Ukraine on Thursday.

According to the cargo manifest released by MAS, the medical supplies were among the items registered in the "special load" category.

The supplies may or may not be related to the onboard delegation believed to have been heading to the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne.

The cargo manifest also revealed that 1452kg lithium batteries were being transported.

Besides the medical supplies and batteries, pets - including two dogs, five birds and four pigeons - as well as 215kg of fresh cut flowers, textiles, helicopter and aircraft parts and diplomatic mail were also part of the cargo.

Flight MH17 was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport when it crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border on Thursday.

It was reported to have been shot down by pro-Russian separatists.

All 298 people onboard, including 15 crewmembers, are believed to have been killed.
