Busted: The metal gate’s lock was prised open.

Actor and director Yusof Haslam has played a police officer many times on Malaysian crime serials, but on Monday, he turned crimebuster in real life when he foiled a burglary.

Yusof, who acts and directs in the highly-rated Gerak Khas, fired three warning shots to scare off the burglars who had entered his house in Selangor, The Star reported.

At about 2.30am, Yusof, who is in his 60s, was watching TV on the second-storey when he heard his maid's shouts for help downstairs.

The Malaysian Digest quoted Yusof as saying: "As my house is on a hilltop and surrounded by the jungle, I knew that my house would be broken into one day.

"When I heard the scream, I immediately took out my Glock pistol and shouted at the stairwell, 'Who's there? Are you robbers? I'll shoot!' I then fired a warning shot."

Awakened by the commotion, one of his sons, Mr Syamsul Yusof, came out of his room. The two men went to inspect a bedroom and found it ransacked.

A police source told The Star: "Datuk (Yusof) then went to check on his metal gate and saw the robbers had prised the lock open.

"He fired two more shots towards a jungle nearby as he believed the burglars could have escaped there."

No gloves

Ampang Police Assistant Commissioner Khairuldin Saat said there were three masked suspects and they wore black clothing, but did not wear gloves.

"According to the maid, the burglars spoke fluent Malay. So far, we believe the robbers fled with a watch and a ring, believed to be worth RM10,000 (S$3,920) in all," he added.

Yusof's wife, Madam Patimah Ismail, said her family and the authorities were studying security-camera footage of the incident, The Star reported.

"The robbers pointed their pistols at our maid, but thankfully, she was only slightly injured. They stole my son Syafiq's wedding gifts - a ring and a watch," she said.

She added that she was grateful that her husband had acted quickly and scared the burglars away.

It was also learnt that a security guard who was on duty at that time was oblivious to the incident and only realised what had occurred after being informed by Yusof, The Malaysian Chronicle reported.
