Mum and stepdad deny hurting boy

The Star/ANN | Saturday, May 31, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR - The mother and stepfather of a six-year-old child, who died of severe burns from alleged abuse, have denied they ever laid a finger on the child.

The victim's 31-year-old mother and 35-year-old stepfather, who are being remanded until Monday for a murder investigation, claimed they did not know how he ended up with 33.5 per cent severe burns on his face and body.

"They are being careful of what they are saying. They are denying they abused the boy," said Ampang Jaya OCPD ACP Khairuldin Saad.

He said police were collecting statements from the couple's neighbours and friends.

The suspects were arrested on Monday at their home in Pangsapuri Permai Ria in Ampang.

Hours earlier, the boy fell unconscious and was pronounced dead at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Doctors said the boy had burns on his body, face, hands and legs which were believed to have been caused by boiling water.

He was the fourth of five children and had been staying with the suspects since his mother divorced from his biological father in 2009.

Police did not find any signs of abuse on the victim's other siblings.

His mother is now five months pregnant with her sixth child.
