NGO: Mother of toddler girl living on the streets

The Star/ANN | Saturday, May 31, 2014

PETALING JAYA - The mother of a girl who was beheaded has been living on the streets even though she has family members staying in Cheras.

Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) project director Justin Cheah said the team had provided food and assistance in the past to the 32-year-old mother who was often seen "here and there".

He said the woman sometimes stayed under a bridge by the river near the Bulatan Syed Putra, where 15 to 30 other homeless people seek shelter.

"She has problems with her family and is quite rebellious. Our volunteers tried to counsel her and persuade her to return to her family in Cheras (Kuala Lumpur) but she refused," said Cheah yesterday.

He said the woman, who did odd jobs, also received aid from other charitable organisations.

Cheah said there were about 850 homeless people in Kuala Lumpur and most of them live on the streets because of social problems including unemployment, broken homes and drug addiction.

The horrific murder of the child has left many shocked, with netizens venting their anger on social media.

Facebook user Noon Sod wrote, "If (the suspect) really drowned, they better find his body, and cut his head for good measure. Just to be sure la. Better be safe than sorry."

Miz Nyna was also furious, writing: "Just wish that the suspect gets eaten by crocodiles," while@PhoebeShafinaz tweeted, "How could someone behead a two-year-old girl? What has she ever done to you that you make her and her family suffer? I just don't understand."

Some netizens expressed their support for the child's 32-year-old homeless mother.

Iza Sofia Kasbi wrote, "This is heart-breaking. I have no words to describe my despair. Where is help for the homeless mum? Unfortunately, the homeless are always without a voice. This senseless murder is just too much. Sigh."

A few, however, blamed the mother, claiming that it was irresponsible of her to have left her toddler unattended while she had gone to the washroom.
