Sailor drowns after jumping off burning ship

BANTING- A sailor drowned after he jumped out of a burning ship into the water to save himself at Sungai Langat.

The 33-year-old-man, identified as Abdul Syukur Mohd Nazim, jumped into the river around 10.38pm on Saturday. Firefighters were able to put out the flames and rescue the other crew members on board the ship near Carey Island, but were unable to locate Abdul Syukur.

A search and rescue operation was launched with the help of nearby fishermen and Abdul Syukur's body was discovered around 10.45am yesterday.

His body was sent to Banting Hospital for a post-mortem.

Kuala Langat fire station chief Mohd Jaslizad Jalil confirmed the incident.
