Two dead, 19 missing as boat capsizes off Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR - At least two people died and 19 others were missing after an overloaded boat carrying illegal Indonesian immigrants capsized off the coast of southern Malaysia Tuesday, a maritime official said.

"The boat carried illegal immigrants going back to Indonesia" to celebrate the end of Ramadan, the official told AFP, adding that 59 people were rescued after the accident late Monday.

"The boat was small and... overloaded," the official from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said, requesting anonymity.

JOHOR BARU - Two people drowned and 19 are missing after a boat carrying some 80 illegal immigrants collided with a Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) vessel in Tanjung Piai waters and capsized.

The MMEA was in the midst of conducting an operation to nab illegals when the incident occurred around 1.33am Tuesday.

It is learnt that the boat was ferrying the illegals to Indonesia.

Two bodies have been recovered and 10 of those saved were sent to the nearest hospital.

MMEA has launched a search-and-rescue mission to locate the missing passengers
