White Paper on militants in works

The Star/ANN | Wednesday, Oct 29, 2014

Malaysia's Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

PARLIAMENT: At The DEWAN RAKYAT - The public will soon be able to know more about militant threats and activities as the Government is preparing a White Paper on Malaysians involved with violent extremism.

"A White Paper is being prepared to inform the rakyat soon about such activities and threats concerning Malaysians," Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said in reply to Dr Ko Chung Sen (DAP-Kampar).

He said that since December 2001, 167 Malaysians had been identified as being involved in militant activities abroad.

"Of this number, 39 are involved with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria," he said.

The Government, he maintained, was serious about addressing the issue, with police carrying out investigations against individuals or groups suspected of being a threat to the nation's security and peace.

At present, those suspected of being involved in such groups are blacklisted by the Immigration Department.

"Their names are on the department's Security List to detect their movements at the country's main entry points," he added.

He said Malaysian police were also working closely with their foreign counterparts, particularly in ASEAN nations.

He warned that those involved with such groups would face stern action.
