KUANTAN - A group of teenagers braved muddy waters to help those affected by the recent floods in Kuantan.

Youth volunteers from the American Field Service (AFS) Kuantan Chapter worked with local hospitals to help victims recover from their ordeal.

The teenagers began their volunteering stint at Kampung Jawa, after business at the daily morning market came to a halt due to rising waters.

A. Raatchana, 17, said volunteers distributed water, biscuits and blankets to victims in Kampung Jawa, some 4km from the city centre. "It was worth every bit of energy," said Raatchana.

The teenagers then headed over to Sungai Isap where flood waters rose to roof-level.

Tay Jia Hui, 19, said the volunteers helped nurses from the local hospital remove beds soaked in water from their houses.

"We also cleaned up mud-stained cutlery and sent spoilt items for recycling. I am thankful to be part of this humbling experience," Tay said.

His sentiment was echoed by 19-year-old Lim Soon Pin, who said that "Christmas, was after all, a time for giving".

All 14 volunteers spent a few hours at both villages, helping out flood victims.
