5 destinations in Indonesia to spoil your stomach

The Jakarta Post/ANN | Indohoy | Thursday, May 22, 2014

In a country as diverse in culture as Indonesia, you can easily fill you stomach, hit your culinary high numerous times, mess up your palate, or gag more than a few times. There are so many places with so many dishes here that eating becomes another adventure.

As the dry season approaches, people like to travel to the beach, dive or hike mountains, but why not travel for food once in a while? Here's some places you can visit to enjoy local food.

Manado

Red might be the favourite colour of the Manadonese, as when it comes to ingredients, chili is the number one.

Manado dishes are known to be very spicy, even to the Indonesian tongue.

Chilies are often incorporated in their dishes. Seafood is cooked rica-rica style, which is like a chili paste, or woku, a broth with coconut milk and basil leaf.

Add to that signature condiments such as Roa fish chili paste and their notorious dabu-dabu, consisting of generous chunks of tomatoes, chili, shallots, bathed in lime juice, and add a few drops of pure coconut oil.

Did I mention that they eat their banana fritters with chili paste?

After, you can treat yourself to one of the best desserts in town, the Klapertaart. This coconut pudding is enriched with strips of young coconut and bits of raisin. If you are lucky, the nightcap will contain a hint of rum.
