AirAsia gets short shrift

New Straits Times | Tuesday, May 6, 2014

SEPANG - AirAsia Bhd is upset that Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has asked all AirAsia airline staff to park their cars at the long-term parking complex located near Sama Sama Hotel when they move to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2) in Sepang on May 9.

It is learnt that the staff would also have to pay more than RM60 (S$23) a month to park at the complex which has no security features.

To make matters worse, staff of other airlines operating at klia2 could park their vehicles within the airport premises.

These included Malindo Air, Philippines' Cebu Pacific Air, Singapore's Tiger Airways and Indonesia's Mandala Airlines and Lion Air.

"This is also going to burden our staff, especially those with minimum wages. MAHB cannot expect AirAsia to subsidise the rates as we have other costs to meet. And we cannot be providing shuttle services as that wasn't part of the deal," an unnamed AirAsia source lamented.

According to the source, MAHB had promised to provide free shuttle services every 15 minutes to transfer AirAsia staff from the parking complex to klia2. The airline is hoping that the government will intervene and resolve the matter amicably.

It was also understood that airline staff and employees of retailers operating at klia2 would need to pay RM160 a month when they park their cars at the airport, which was more than double the current rate they were paying to park at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).
