Acclaimed Chinese musical drama Nasirdin Afandi (阿凡提) will make its debut in Singapore on 23 and 24 May 2014 at the Kallang Theatre.
The production is jointly presented by Lianhe Zaobao, the Chinese flagship daily of Singapore Press Holdings, and Asia Arts & Culture. Performed by the Beijing Huaxia Musical Performing Troupe, Nasirdin Afandi garnered rave reviews when it premiered in Beijing last year. It has since toured various cities in China including Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing.
Based on a Chinese folktale, Nasirdin Afandi tells the story of a Xinjiang young man, Kaisaer, who admires and dreams of becoming Afandi, a legendary wise old man. Kaisaer's scheming landlord makes use of him to gain the trust of the people by getting him to pose as Afandi. After Kaisaer is exposed, he meets the real Afandi, who guides him with his wisdom. With the help from Afandi, Kaisaer punishes the greedy landlord and uses his wisdom to help his town folks achieve wealth and happiness. He eventually marries his beloved sweetheart.
The timeless tale of Nasirdin Afandi appeals to both young and old. The entertaining and colourful production has broad appeal and educational value. It conveys valuable lessons on the importance of kindness, diligence, wisdom and harmony, and provides an opportunity for family bonding.
The vibrant musical also features traditional Xinjiang elements and music, as well as Oriental dances from China's far west and Persia.
Mr Lim Huan Chiang, Vice President of Cultural Industry Promotion, Chinese Newspapers Division, said: "SPH's Chinese Newspapers Division has always been actively promoting Chinese culture in Singapore. Previously, we have presented several major Chinese musical productions such as Immortality, A Tale of Shaolin, Journey to the West, Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva and Opera Warriors. The most recent production, The Golden Lotus, which was staged last year, was also well-received by the Singapore audiences. We are confident that our local audiences will enjoy this entertaining production."
