Godzilla turns 60

Godzilla and Toho Co. movie director Minami Ichikawa receive a certificate marking the 60th anniversary of Godzilla's film debut from Nobuto Hosaka, mayor of Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, at the Toho Studios on Monday. Twenty-eight Godzilla films were produced by the movie company, which is located in the ward. Godzilla made its presence known by roaring when it showed up for the ceremony. Hosaka congratulated the monster on its 60th birthday.

Gunma-chan triumphs

Gunma-chan, centre, the mascot of Gunma Prefecture, won this year's "yurukyara" grand prix, an event supported by The Yomiuri Shimbun. Fukka-chan, right, the mascot of Fukaya, Saitama Prefecture, was second. At left is Ehime Prefecture's Mikyan, which was third. About 1,700 regional and company mascots participated in the annual popularity contest for mascots, with the final vote held at Chubu Airport in Aichi Prefecture on Monday. Gunma-chan, third last year, won 1,002,505 votes for a clear victory.
