Construction works at Tampines Town Hub officially kick-started

AsiaOne | Sunday, Jun 1, 2014

SINGAPORE - Construction works to upgrade the Tampines Town Hub (the Hub) site were officially kick-started on Sunday morning.

Minister for Education Mr Heng Swee Keat, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Mr Mah Bow Tan and Mr Baey Yam Keng joined 1,000 residents at the event, which also saw the start of operations for Tampines Town Hub Connect (Hub Connect).

Hub Connect is an information centre launched for a community development. Located next to the Hub at 505 Tampines Ave 5, Hub Connect highlights the journey residents have taken with the Hub so far, and provides updates on the project's progress. Residents can also share their ideas and inputs at Hub Connect.

"Tampines Town Hub is a unique project. Our residents are thrilled about the Hub because it will be based on residents' own vision of the activities and lifestyle they would like. As construction begins, the other Tampines GRO Advisers and I intend to keep on engaging with residents for their ideas and wishes, and even their time if they wish to volunteer, to bring residents' Tampines Town Hub vision to life," said Mr Heng.

The idea for the Hub was first mooted in 2011, and over 15,000 residents' views were sought in its initial design. Since the mass groundbreaking by over 2,500 residents last year, the project has remained connected to residents through a series of activities.

A second engagement exercise is planned to better ensure that services and facilities are useful and fit residents' lifestyles. The exercise will focus on the desired flow of the Hub's One-Stop Service Centre, programming and activities. The opportunity will also be taken to invite residents to become more involved, either by setting up interest groups or by becoming volunteers.

Said Mr Victor Quek, 58, who has been living in Tampines for seven years, said: "With the upcoming Tampines Town Hub, facilities such as the library and food court, which used to be located a distance away and in different place, are now centralised and in a single location. I think this will benefit not just the young, but especially the elderly living in our town. I look forward to the completion of Tampines Town Hub!"
