INCIDENT SITE: The collapsed boom of the crane

Crane boom crashes on slip road near Lau Pa Sat, no casualties reported

He almost spilled his coffee when he heard what sounded like an explosion across the road.

Mr Ivan Lau, a cook at an eatery at Lau Pa Sat, was having his coffee break just before 6pm yesterday when the incident happened.

Just 50m from where he was standing, a crane boom at a nearby worksite at Market Street had crashed.

The impact created a large dust cloud and the sound reverberated around the buildings.

"When I first heard the boom, I thought it was an explosion," the 28-year-old Malaysian said.

"Everyone came out of the kitchen to see what had happened."

The dust cloud slowly dissipated and they realised that a crane boom had fallen onto a slip road leading to the construction site.

"I thought, surely, somebody would have died," said Mr Lau.

Fortunately, there were no casualties.
