Endearing home: More work still needs to be done, says MP

The Straits Times | Lydia Lim | Monday, May 19, 2014

The commitment to ensure a better living environment is heartening, but more work still needs to be done, said Ms Lee Bee Wah (Nee Soon GRC).

"Transport is still an issue. You can add buses and monitor trains, but it takes time to see improvements," said Ms Lee, chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for National Development and Environment. "In the meantime, you have to see if capacity is adequate, especially in the morning."

She laughingly added: "Nobody wants to get up too early, but they don't want to be late for work either."

Ms Lee also wants more childcare centres and multi-generational flats. "Our demographics are changing; more than ever, people will rely on the community to help them out."

Mr Ang Hin Kee (Ang Mo Kio GRC) believes it is also important to have a sense of place.

"You must be able to identify with certain spaces, either because you grew up or studied there," he said. "Such a relationship with a place takes time to cultivate. So, it is not just about spending money to build, but spending time so that it becomes part of your history.
