Safeguards for aid payouts

The Straits Times | Friday, Aug 8, 2014

Safeguards are in place to ensure that financial assistance payouts will no longer be paid out wrongly, said Health Minister Gan Kim Yong in Parliament yesterday.

These include changes to the processing system that will "trigger alerts when there are errors in data uploading and processing", Mr Gan said.

He was speaking in response to Dr Chia Shi-Lu, chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Health, who had asked how the ministry would ensure no such errors in future. Last month, the Auditor-General's Report showed that the Health Ministry had continued to pay $64,000 in financial assistance to 99 people even after their deaths.

The mistake occurred because the list of dead aid recipients was not updated in certain months, said Mr Gan.

"This has since been rectified," he said, adding that his ministry has sought full reimbursement from the agent administering the service.
