SMS on $1,000 'FairPrice gift card' a scam

The New Paper | Monday, Sep 1, 2014

He received an SMS message yesterday, claiming to be from NTUC FairPrice.

It said he had won a gift card worth $1,000. To claim his prize, all he had to do was click on a link and provide his particulars for verification.

But the consultant in his 40s, who did not want to be named, told The New Paper: "The sender's number was not displayed and when I clicked on the link, it asked for my personal details so I suspected the message could be a scam."

And it was. TNP checked with NTUC FairPrice.

NTUC FairPrice Director of corporate communications Jonas Kor said it is not currently running any promotion or contest online that offers such a prize.

"Winners of our contests are notified by post or e-mail, and the results are also published in press advertisements," he said. "We (also) do not inform contest winners via phone.".

NTUC FairPrice did not say if it had received any complaints about what may be a phishing scam.
