Tan Jee Say to engage opposition parties

The Straits Times | Walter Sim | Sunday, Aug 31, 2014

Former presidential candidate Tan Jee Say.

Former presidential candidate Tan Jee Say said yesterday that his newly registered political party will actively engage in dialogue with other opposition parties to ensure "our chances of success at the elections are enhanced".

This is the main aim, he said, of the Singaporeans First party, which received the nod from the Registry of Societies last week.

One of the issues he hopes to discuss with them is the avoidance of multi-cornered fights with other parties at the next polls, due by January 2017 at the latest.

Mr Tan, 60, is the party's secretary-general in a pro-tem committee that has been formed. He contested under the Singapore Democratic Party banner in the 2011 General Election.

In a brief telephone interview with The Straits Times, he said: "Our objective is to ensure that the overall interest in opposition unity is served, and that our chances of success are enhanced."

The party has also started an online recruitment drive for members, he added, saying: "We do not have a target but will get as many people on board as we can."

The Singaporeans First party has 11 founding members. They include architects, a retired army colonel and other professionals.

Following its registration, the proposed party logo - a heart within a circle - has been submitted to the Registry of Societies for approval.

The process is expected to take a few weeks, said Mr Tan, who is a financial adviser and former investment banker and civil servant.

He said last May when announcing the move to register the party that it would champion a new national narrative that puts people at the heart of all policies, rather than treat them as "economic digits".
