Cricket: Singapore cricketers stay in the hunt

SINGAPORE - The Singapore national cricket team kept their challenge on table-toppers Saudi Arabia in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Elite League Singapore yesterday with a storming eight-wicket win over Bahrain at Kallang.

Bowling out the Gulf state for 86, the hosts knocked off the runs inside seven overs and boosted their overall tournament run rate.

The massive victory kept Singapore in the hunt for the ACC Elite League title.

Kuwait's big win over Bhutan yesterday meant that the former also have a chance of catching Saudi Arabia, provided they beat the league leaders tomorrow in their final match.

Singapore's off-spinner Dharmichand Mulewa (above) did most of the damage against Bahrain in the morning, taking four wickets for Singapore cricketers stay in the hunt just 10 runs in seven overs, leaving the visitors all out for a paltry 86 runs.

Going into bat, and aware of the need to boost their net-run rate, Singapore blasted 13 boundaries in just 41 deliveries to overhaul Bahrain with Chetan Suryawanshi (37 not out) and Arjun Mutreja (33) contributing heavily.

Saudi have eight points and a net run rate (NRR) of 3.129, Singapore (six points, 2.710 NRR) and Kuwait (six points, 1.481 NRR).

At Kallang: Bahrain 86 in 29.5 overs (A Hanif 28; D Mulewa 4-10, A Mahboob 2-20, A Singh 2-14). Singapore 92-2 in 6.5 overs (C Suryawanshi 37 n.o., A Mutreja 33). S'pore win by 8 wkts. Man of the match: D Mulewa.

At Indian Association: Saudi Arabia 347-3 in 50 overs (S Rasheed 138 n.o., A Saleem 100 n.o.). Maldives 159-7 in 50 overs. Saudi win by 188 runs.

At the Padang: Bhutan 169-7 in 50 overs. Kuwait 173-4 in 13.4 overs.

Kuwait win by 6 wkts.
