F1 fans can lap up a history lesson

The Straits Times | Chua Siang Yee | Sunday, Aug 10, 2014

The Marina Bay Street Circuit will welcome the Masters Historic Formula One cars.

Formula One fans are in for a trip down memory lane at next month's Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix.

For the first time in the event's seven-year history, 20 Masters Historic F1 Cars - vehicles which competed from the 1960s to the 1980s - will grace the Marina Bay Street Circuit from Sept 19-21.

They will be challenging one another in the FIA Masters Historic F1 Championship and Masters Historic Grand Prix.

Said Ron Maydon, president and founder of this Masters competition: "We will bring 20 of the most iconic North American and European cars from F1 history.

"It will be the first time that the motor racing fans in Singapore will see such classic cars race in action, and we are confident they will enjoy the sights and sounds of a super-fast history lesson just as much as watching their current F1 heroes."

Like their modern counterparts, the classic cars will be in action on all three days - practice, qualifying and race day - of the race weekend.

It will also be the first time these "veteran" cars are competing in a night event.

Decked out in period livery and equipped with three-litre engines, the refurbished cars can hit top speeds of 160kmh, albeit a far cry from the modern F1 machines which can reach up to 300kmh.

Colin Syn, deputy chairman of Singapore GP, said: "The Masters are a great addition to our support track action.

"Fans can look forward to the thrilling spectacle of racing history set against the stunning Singapore skyline."

Tickets for the Singapore Grand Prix are available for sale at www.singaporegp.sg, via the ticketing hotline 67386738 as well as all authorised ticketing agents.
