Netball: Singapore to face Sri Lanka in Asian final; both qualify for next year's World Cup

AFP | Saturday, Sep 13, 2014

Singapore are through to the final of the Mission Foods Asian Netball Championship after seeing off Causeway rivals Malaysia 46-39 in their semi-final meeting at the Sports Hub's OCBC Arena on Saturday.

In a rematch of the 2012 final, which went Singapore's way, the hosts will meet Sri Lanka in Sunday's gold medal match. Sri Lanka booked their place in the final after seeing off Hong Kong 57-42.

Regardless of who is crowned Asian champion, both Singapore and Sri Lanka are through to next year's Netball World Cup in Australia by virtue of being the top two teams in the Asian championship, which serves as a qualifier for the world cup.

Singapore's goal shooter Charmaine Soh led the way for the hosts against Malaysia, sinking 28 of her 35 shots while co vice-captain Chen Huifen accounted for the other 18 goals.

The visitors scored through goalshooter Norashikin Kamal Zaman (31 goals) and goal attacker Izyan Syazana (eight).

Earlier in the day, India set up a fifth-placed play-off with Chinese Taipei on Sunday after the pair saw off Brunei (58-56) and Japan (54-24) respectively. Brunei and Japan will battle for 7th place on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the play-off for ninth place in the 10-team tournament, Myanmar beat Vietnam 61-26.
