This is the first time SPH has organised the qualifiers for the World Golfers Championships. The SPH WGC 2014 is the national qualifier for the WGC tournament that takes place this year at Durban, South Africa from the 1st to 8th November. This year marks the 20th edition of the WGC.

The WGC offers a unique playing format as it has different handicap divisions for golfers of varying abilities. At Durban, the golfers will play two practice rounds and four tournament rounds. They will compete for the team title as well as individual honours in their respective handicap divisions. Singapore won the WGC team event in 2008.

The SPH WGC began with two qualifying rounds played in September at Sentosa's Golf Club's Tanjong Course. It attracted a total of 240 golfers over the two rounds, with the top 80 golfers playing in today's finals round.

The entry fees were $588 for each golfer, with an early bird price of $488. Those who wanted direct entry into the national finals paid $1,288 for the limited slots available.

All golf participants received a one-year All-in-One print and digital subscription for The New Paper, a box of Titleist Velocity golf balls and other gifts worth more than $300. Other than their trip to the world finals, the five winners will be attired by sponsors Titleist and Footjoy. They will also receive coaching tips from one of Singapore's top golf coaches, Mr M. Balraj.

Mr S Murali, Deputy Editor at The New Paper and also the organiser of the SPH WGC event said : "Congratulations to the five winners who will represent Singapore at this November's WGC event. We have been impressed with the standards of golf being played over the qualifiers and the final. I am sure they will do themselves proud and fly our flag high in this event."
