S.League: Three steps to success

Preview on S.League match between Tanjong Pagar vs Balestier Khalsa, focusing on return of midfielder Kamel Ramdani, and another profile on rising young player M Arvin.

SINGAPORE - Tanjong Pagar United may be third from bottom in the Great Eastern-Yeo's S.League, but head coach Patrick Vallee has a plan to solve that problem.

The Frenchman has it down to three simple steps.

He told The New Paper at the Queenstown Stadium yesterday: "Slowly my players are coming back to fitness, and I know we can start climbing the table.

"The first step is to get three points against Balestier (Khalsa)."

"The second step is to keep the squad fit and free from injury, and hope that the rest return as quickly as possible."

"Finally, the third step is playing attractive football and keep fighting like we've done in every game, even if we lose."

Vallee has been particularly distressed by his team's poor luck.

Talisman Kamel Ramdani has just returned from a lengthy knee injury, but Masrezwan Masturi and Ahmad Latiff are still nursing injuries.

Said Vallee: "Throughout the 13 games, I don't think I've been able to field the same first team. "I can't find consistent players, because when someone is fit, someone else is either suspended or unfit or injured again, so it's very difficult and frustrating for me.

"We can't compete with teams like DPMM, Warriors, Tampines or even Home United, who can field the same players for their games. That's why they're fighting at the top of the league."

"We need the full squad to come back and, when everyone is fit, we can do better."

Vallee's charges have been a shadow of the side that finished sixth last season.

They have eked out only two wins this season, along with four draws and seven losses.

FIREPOWER

Their firepower also hasn't been up to standard (12 goals scored), too.

Tonight's opponents Balestier Khalsa are in good spirits after welcoming back maestro Park Kang Jin, and posting a 3-1 win over Warriors FC in the RHB Singapore Cup last week.
