Cycling paths to cater to cyclists of all skill levels

A cycling path in Pasir Ris Drive 3. Over the next 15 years, the LTA will connect cycling paths between adjacent towns “where there is sufficient demand”. It will also explore providing inter-town routes to commute to the CBD.

We refer to the letters by Mr Eric Loo Min Hua and Mr Jeffrey Tan on dedicated on-road cycling lanes (The New Paper, Oct 20, 2014).

Currently, cyclists are allowed to ride on all roads, including the bus lanes at all times, except expressways and road tunnels.

To improve and expand the provision of cycling facilities, our approach is to provide dedicated off-road cycling paths as they are safer and can better cater to cyclists of all skill levels.

NETWORK

The Land Transport Master Plan 2013 has laid down long-term plans to build a dedicated cycling path network in every HDB town so that people can cycle safely to the MRT station and nearby amenities.

Over the next 15 years, we will connect cycling path networks between adjacent towns where there is sufficient demand, and also integrate intra-town networks with NParks' Park Connector Networks to give cyclists a comprehensive island-wide cycling path network that will reach over 700km in length.

More cycling infrastructure will also be provided to improve the cycling experience, and this includes bicycle crossings, wheeling ramps and parking facilities.

It will take some time for all the cycling infrastructure projects to be completed, but we are working hard to make cycling more convenient and safe.
