KUALA LUMPUR: A burglary suspect was shot dead by a policeman during a scuffle yesterday in Jalan Datuk Haji Harun, Taman Taynton View, Cheras, near here.
Mohd Nur Syadiqin Sharudin, 20, allegedly tried to snatch a pistol from the policeman trying to handcuff him.
It is believed the pistol went off during the incident, killing Nur Syadiqin on the spot.
The drama started at 6.45pm when a police patrol car on crime prevention rounds in Taman Mutiara Barat spotted four men in a Proton Waja behaving suspiciously.
Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Amir Mohd Hashim said they sped off when they saw the police approaching, prompting a pursuit.
"The driver drove in a reckless manner and crashed into several cars before coming to a stop in Jalan Bee Eng 1 in Taman Taynton View," he said last night.
"Two men got out of the vehicle and fled while one was nabbed by policemen after a chase."
The fourth man, Nur Syadiqin, tried to run into a lane in between a row of shophouses but was spotted by a policeman manning a beat base there.
It is understood that the policeman managed to cuff one of Nur Syadiqin's hands.
However, Nur Syadiqin allegedly tried to grab the policeman's gun, resulting in a struggle.
The gun went off during the struggle and Nur Syadiqin was shot.
Police said he had a previous conviction for car theft.
A check on the Proton Waja driven by the suspects showed that it had false registration plates.
Police also found numerous tools in the car which were believed to have been used for breaking into houses.
Investigations are under way to ascertain how many cases the group was involved in.
The arrested suspect is expected to be remanded today.
