Scammers are selling counterfeit digital watches using the Singapore Red Cross as a front.
According to the Singapore Red Cross Society (SRC), members of the public alerted them on May 14 that such scams were taking place in various parts of Singapore.
The individuals were misled into buying counterfeit digital watches by sellers who used the Singapore Red Cross emblem as a front for their activities.
They had informed the individuals that the proceeds from the sale will go to the SRC.
The SRC said that it is currently not having any street collection and had not authorised any third party to solicit funds for them.
Legitimate volunteers doing public street collection should have documentation from the National Council of Social Services.
The license issued by the NCSS, signed and stamped with the official Red Cross logo will include the name of the fundraiser, purpose of collection, nature of event and the period of collection.
In addition, third-party organisations collecting donations on behalf of the Society would require authorisation from the police.
If suspicious, the public can request to see the collector's certificate of authority, which is issued by the NCSS or the police.
