SINGAPORE - He had everything going for him - a good job, a steady girlfriend and superiors who thought highly of him.
But the downward spiral for Chan Wei Kiat, 27, came when he was investigated for paying a minor for sex last December.
Chan, who was then a captain with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), was suspended from his position.
On Monday, the once top performer in the diving training course who was chosen for the Naval Divers Unit, was sentenced to 11 weeks' jail for having paid sex with an underage prostitute.
The court heard that Chan had paid for sex with the same underage prostitute as Howard Shaw Chai Li, the grandson of the founder of cinema giant Shaw Organisation.
Chan had learnt of the sexual services provided by the minor from a website and engaged her services through her pimp.
On Nov 6, 2010, Chan checked into a room at Hotel 81 Lavender between 1.45pm and 3.35pm, and had sex with the minor.
He later paid her $500 for the service. Chan did not verify the age of the prostitute.
The RSN scholar was among 51 men charged with having sex with the same minor between September 2010 and October last year.
Chan was the 11th man to be sentenced.
Former Pei Chun Public School principal Lee Lip Hong was the first to plead guilty and was sentenced to nine weeks' jail on April 27.
Chan's lawyer, Mr Josephus Tan, told the court that Chan is the eldest of four sons and the main financial contributor to his family.
His 59-year-old father earns about $2,000 as a taxi driver and his mother, 50, earns about $700 as a cashier.
His younger brothers are either serving National Service or still in school.
As he has a humble family background, Chan tried to better himself by applying successfully for the RSN local scholarship.
He went on to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at the Nanyang Technological University between 2007 and 2010.
On Monday, two more men were each jailed for 12 weeks for having paid sex with the same minor.
Louis Lee Lip Kian, 33, a former bank officer, pleaded guilty to paying between $500 and $600 for sex with the minor at Hotel 81 on Bencoolen Street on Nov 20, 2010.
The other man, Pyi Kyaw Han, 31, had paid $650 for sex with the same minor at Strand Hotel on Bencoolen Street on Dec 21, 2010.
The court heard that Pyi, who had received his Singapore citizenship in 2007, was a director of a company dealing in security at the time of his offence.
Pyi did not verify the age of the minor, even though she had told him that she was a final-year student in a polytechnic.
