KUALA TERENGGANU - A young mother was charged at the Sessions Court yesterday with attempting to murder her 2-month-old daughter last week by flinging her into a well.

Maznah Raimuddin @ Mustaffa, 26, who was clad in purple police lock-up overalls and a maroon headscarf, only nodded when the interpreter asked her if she understood the charge.

Maznah was charged with throwing her baby girl, Nur Iffah Zulaikha Mohd Affendi, into a well near her house with the intention of attempting to cause her death.

She is alleged to have committed the offence at Peng-kalan Arang, near here, about 10am on November 10.

She was detained by police at 5pm that day.

Maznah, a mother of four, faces a maximum jail term of 10 years' jail and a fine if convicted.

Sessions judge Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh ordered Maznah to be placed at the Permai psychiatric hospital in Tampoi, Johor, pending mention on December 27.

According to reports, the baby was saved by her grandfather after his wife witnessed the incident.
