The Singapore government will donate US$50,000 of humanitarian aid to the North Korean flood victims.
Additionally, the the Singapore Red Cross Society will also make a separate contribution of US$19,000 to this humanitarian effort through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies., the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement today.
North Korea has said that the floods from a week of heavy rain has wiped out more than 11 percent of its farmland, expected to create further food shortages in the country that already relies on outside aid to provide for its people.

South Korea offered a quick aid package Friday to North Korea after devastating floods that battered the impoverished country and were expected to worsen existing food shortages.

The floods have left 300,000 people homeless, killed 83 people and destroyed 58,000 houses and more than 90,000 hectares (222,390 acres) of farmland, according to a senior U.N. official.

U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Margareta Wahlstrom, deputy emergency relief coordinator, said Thursday in New York that about 60 people were also missing in the storms that have destroyed hundreds of bridges and a number of public buildings, along with knocking out pumping stations and power supplies.

Earlier today, South Korea offered a quick aid package of US$7.5 million in relief supplies, Unification Minister Lee Jae-joung told reporters in Seoul.

"Considering the seriousness of human and property damage, the government decided to provide emergency relief on grounds of humanitarianism and brotherly love," Lee said.

He said the government would aim to start shipping the supplies early next week, which will include instant noodles, drinking water, blankets, medicine and other necessities.

Washington also pledged US$100,000 (euro74,599) to help flood victims.

The U.S. Agency for International Development will give the money to two non-governmental organizations that will supply the North with relief goods such as blankets, shelter materials and water containers, the U.S. Embassy in Seoul said in a statement.
