100 low income families will receive a free 3-year broadband internet connection.
This is an initiative by the South West Community Development Council (CDC) which is organising Project GAPc (Project Giving Away Personal Computers) to help bridge the digital divide between South West District's residents.
10-year old Muhammad Amsyar, who is one of the receipients of a new personal computer, says: "I no longer need to go to my uncle's or neighbour's place to use the computer. I would be having one at home!"
Yes, not everyone is blessed with a personal computer at home.
For Amsyar, it is a norm for him to stay back after school or head to his neighbour's place to use a desktop and internet for his school work.
Other times, he would visit his relatives when he feels he is imposing on his neighbour.
His four other siblings also grew up without the luxury of having a desktop and internet connection at home.
Amsyar's father is the family's sole breadwinner and he earns just enough to make ends meet. It is a pinch for the family to purchase a desktop and subscribe for broadband connection.
As part of the programme, families also get to undergo a one-day boot camp at ITE College West where they are taught on how to use the internet responsibly.
There is a specially tailored programme to expose these families to the advantages of social networking, home-based employment openings and, business opportunities through the setting up of online shops and auctions such as eBay.
