A Singaporean man killed his Filipino wife and then drowned himself in the United States last Monday, reported The Straits Times.

Suspecting that his wife, Madam Ruth Sigue, 38, was having an affair, Mr Peter Ng, 58, stabbed her several times, killing her in their New Jersey apartment. He then drowned himself in the nearby Hudson River.

Earlier that morning, the couple's two daughters, aged one and six, were abandoned by their father at a local Filipino eatery after having their breakfast. The Straits Times noted that the staff working at the eatery were confused as to why Mr Ng had chosen to leave his daughters there, as they did not know him personally.

The girls were found with a small cloth bag apparently containing "thousands of dollars", and a tape recorder in the baby's stroller.

It is unclear what was said in the tape left behind in the recorder, but it helped detectives to deduce that the motive for the murder was fury over his wife's suspected affair.

According to The Straits Times, Mr Ng had met Madam Sigue a few years ago in Singapore, and after getting married, they moved to the US in 2005.

She worked as a nurse in a medical centre near their home in New Jersey. Colleagues said she put in long hours at work, appearing to be the sole breadwinner.

The couple's two girls are current in custody of the state. The couple also have another daughter, aged 3, in the Philippines.
