THERE have been reports in the press that two private schools shut down last month with no warning.

I hope that the reports will alert students and parents to the true situation concerning courses offered by various private schools in Singapore.

Many families in South-east Asia send their children here to study, often at considerable expense, as they trust Singapore's good name.

It is to be hoped that stricter rules will help address issues concerning private schools.

It is good to note that a Bill will be introduced in Parliament later this year to tighten regulations for the industry.

This should ensure that private- school operators will not dent Singapore's reputation as an education hub.

Stricter rules are needed to protect students - both Singaporean and foreign - from unscrupulous private-school operators.

Would-be students would do well to take more time in selecting their schools and courses.

They need to do their homework and make the necessary checks.

The bottom line is: Be very careful and ensure that money spent on a private education is money well-spent.
