TOKYO, JAPAN - All Japanese who had been trapped in two Mumbai hotels attacked by armed militants are believed to have escaped unharmed, a Japanese official said Friday.

"All of the 10 Japanese nationals, who had been there as far as the Japanese government knew, have escaped," said a foreign ministry official. "None of them were injured."

On Thursday, government spokesman Takeo Kawamura said 10 Japanese were stranded at the Oberoi/Trident and Taj Mahal hotels, but they were "not in a hostage situation."

A Japanese businessman was shot dead late Wednesday as he was checking into the Oberoi/Trident hotel during the attacks which have left at least 130 people dead.
