China Oct CPI up 6.5%

BEIJING - China's annual consumer price inflation quickened to 6.5 per cent in October from 6.2 per cent in September, the official Xinhua news agency on Tuesday cited the National Bureau of Statistics as saying.

Economists polled by Reuters had expected an inflation rate of 6.4 per cent, although markets had been whispering for days that the outcome would be 6.5 per cent - the same as in August.

Inflation was last higher in December 1996, when the rate was 7.0 per cent. -- REUTERS
