WEDDINGS and funerals are the best moments to catch Singaporeans at their worst in dressing for the occasion.

My niece's wedding was held recently at a rather upmarket restaurant.

Although no dress code was specified on the invitation cards, the venue itself would have given the guests an idea on what to wear.

Yet, many did not turn up appropriately dressed.

I went to the dinner in a jacket and tie, which matched my wife's stunning cheongsam.

As it turned out, we were overdressed.

The other guests came in round-neck T-shirts, cargo pants and sneakers, with unkempt hair to boot.

It was not the first time I have seen such attire at dinner functions, and I bet it will not be the last.

Last month, at the funeral wake of my friend's wife, I saw many who came to pay their respects dressed in shorts and sandals, as well as in colours not quite appropriate for the occasion.

The much-publicised funeral of TV comedian 'MC King' also showed us the worst in dress etiquette among Singaporeans - red blouses, Japanese thongs and all.

It was an incongruous and contemptible sight.

Many people seem to have lost their ability to feel for others and to accord them due respect when the occasion calls for it.

This is worrying.
