MY HUSBAND and I were travelling home on the Pan-Island Expressway towards Jurong on Monday around 8.30pm when we witnessed a car accident 20m ahead of us, near the Adam Road exit.

We stopped to help the driver, who was lying on the road with head injuries. The other drivers who stopped to help had already called for an ambulance and the police. By then, the traffic was already piling up behind us.

I was quite surprised that two Traffic Police officers managed to arrive within five minutes on their motorbikes and took control of the traffic situation.

And, within another five minutes, the ambulance arrived and the paramedics whisked the injured man to hospital in under 10 minutes.

My husband and I felt proud of the efficiency of the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

To arrive so shortly after an accident is of paramount importance to the injured and those involved.

Not many of us have witnessed the efficiency with which the police and paramedics operate, and my husband and I were glad to have experienced it at first hand. It was definitely a job well done.

We would also like to mention that, in view of the traffic congestion, the ambulance could not have arrived so swiftly without the help of thoughtful drivers. So, a big "thank you" to the drivers who gave way to the ambulance and emergency vehicles.

Drivers should always strive to do so because a minute's delay could mean death for someone.
