EFFORTS at social integration between Singaporeans and new citizens and permanent residents (PRs) are being made.

Singaporeans can extend friendship and goodwill to them, but only up to a certain point.

If new citizens and PRs do not respond to these overtures, nothing can be expected to happen.

Just as it takes two hands to clap, it takes two parties to build a relationship.

If I am a foreigner in a country and do not want to be isolated from the host society, it is my responsibility to find ways of integrating myself into society.

It would be ridiculous to place the onus for this on my host country's citizens.
