HONG KONG - In the face of complaints and mockery, a teary-looking Gillian Chung sang on broadcaster TVB's charity show on Sunday night.

It was the pop star's first performance since she apologised for the risque photo scandal that erupted last month, saying she had been 'naive and very silly'.

TVB received more than 200 complaints against her appearance on the fund-raiser for victims of China's recent snowstorms, said the South China Morning Post.

Most complainants said it was inappropriate for Chung - whose pristine child-friendly image has been blemished by the scandal - to perform on the show, the report said.

TVB also nipped in the bud an online campaign to poke fun at the 27-year-old member of girl group Twins, said Ming Pao Daily News.

Anti-Chung netizens called on one another to phone the programme and make donations using nicknames such as 'Children's Idol' and 'Naive And Very Silly' to mock Chung, the report said.

TVB executive Ho Lai Chuen admitted that during the telecast, some viewers submitted derisive and dirty names when they called in to donate.

But the TV station screened donors' names before running them on the show, he said.

Chung, who has been criticised for smiling when she said sorry for the scandal last Monday, looked suitably serious on Sunday.

She sang two songs on the show - one with a group of other singers including household name Alan Tam and the other with Charlene Choi, the other member of Twins.

At the end of her performance, she even seemed teary, the report said.

About 20 fans screamed during the duet but she did not respond. Instead of looking at the camera, she mostly kept her eyes on Choi.

After the duet, Twins left without a word to the media.
