NEW DELHI, INDIA: Asia's first global university - to be built at an ancient Buddhist centre of learning in eastern India - is expected to get the formal nod from the East Asia Summit in Bangkok in December.

The summit's 16 member nations will pass a resolution to set up Nalanda University after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presents a draft proposal prepared by an international panel headed by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen.

Singapore, which last year hosted the first meeting of the 10-member panel, known as the Nalanda Mentor Group, has been a driving force behind the move to set up the university. Foreign Minister George Yeo is a member of the panel.
